As a child, when you thought you wanted to be a fireman or a nurse when you grew up, the concept of salaries had never even entered your head. Even when deciding what courses to study at university most students will prioritise long term career satisfaction over money. However, when your earnings are not enough to secure a mortgage or do not afford you life’s luxuries, perhaps motivators change. What if you could retire at 55 instead of 65, or even at 40 for that matter?

If you are considering a career change you may be interested in the following top ten occupations for earning potential:

1. Directors and Chief Executives of Major Organisations

2. Brokers

3. Financial Managers and Chartered Secretaries

4. Medical Practitioners

5. Senior Officials in National Governments

6. Aircraft Pilots and Flight Engineers

7. Managers in Mining and Energy

8. Research and Development Managers

9. Marketing and Sales Managers

10. Solicitors and Lawyers, Judges and Coroners

According to GMB’s review of occupations and earnings, Directors and Chief Executives earn close to £215,000 per annum, which is more than seven times the average UK salary of £29,999. Those fortunate enough to be at board level earn twice as much as Brokers, whose salary of just over £100,000 (an average of £101,627 to be exact) looks paltry in comparison. In third place, with an average salary of £84,000 pa, Financial Managers and Chartered Secretaries begin reducing the earnings gap. Medical Practitioners gross £78,882 every year, proving that over six years at university does pay off.

Senior Government Officials and Aviation Pilots/Engineers earn around £69,000 and £65,000 respectively and from there on the playing field evens out. The next 11 occupations on GMB’s list of 314 professions all attract salaries in the £50,000 to 59,999 bracket – from Mining and Energy Managers to Advertising and Public Relations Managers at 17th on the list. These professionals are joined by IT Consultants, Local Government Officials, Air Traffic Controllers, Senior HR and Industrial Relations Representatives, Financial Institution Managers and Police Inspectors.

Not surprisingly the private sector features prominently in the top 20 occupations, however, GMB’s list indicated the wage gap is decreasing for the public sector and the majority of public sector positions were offering salaries over the UK average of £29,999.

Whichever sector or industry you work in you can increase your earning potential simply by shopping around for your next employer. Or if you like your employer but feel you are underpaid, equip yourself with salary information which will give you far greater bargaining power at your next pay review, the salary surveys on this website can help you out.

Many people dream about finding rewarding, new careers that make them leap out of bed in the morning. Here are some of the top choices for second careers, and what it takes to land a job in the profession.

By Lily McCallister

Unemployed workers aren’t the only ones looking for new jobs. Those who feel stuck in their careers, or are looking for more meaning in their work, are also thinking about making a fresh start. But what are the best careers to pursue the second time around? Career surveys and employment experts have identified the following fields as some of the most fulfilling for people looking to make a change. You won’t land one of these jobs overnight. But with education and preparation, you can well be on your way.

Nursing. If you like helping people, especially when they’re sick, and you have a knack for science, nursing could be a good second career for you. There’s a nursing shortage in the country, so opportunities are certainly there. To become a Registered Nurse, you’ll first need to get a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, or a two to three year AA degree from a community college.

Fashion design. Besides being a fashion designer, careers in fashion range from marketing to merchandising, and apparel construction to buying. If you’ve dreamed of working in any of these capacities in fashion design, you’ll learn the necessary skills by earning a degree at an accredited, career-focused fashion college. Internships while you’re in school and networking with alumni in the industry will also give you a competitive edge in the job market.

Teaching. Some people just know they were meant to be teachers. And those who leave their old jobs to pursue teaching as a second career are frequently the most committed and satisfied educators. If you’re interested in becoming a teacher, check online to find out the licensing requirements in your state. You may need to earn a graduate degree, or at least take additional classes, as well as pass a credentialing exam.

Counseling. Whether you’re interested in working with children, families and couples, or patients experiencing substance abuse or mental health problems, therapy can be a particularly rewarding career. As with teaching, check the licensing requirements in your state. Besides earning a master’s degree in a relevant discipline, you’ll probably also be required to practice under the supervision of an established therapist for a certain amount of hours before being able to hang your own shingle.

Culinary arts. Thanks to the popularity of television cooking shows, a lot of people dream of turning their love of food into a career. But to be a successful chef, it takes more than being a good cook. It can take years of formal training and hands-on experience, starting at the lowest rung in the kitchen before you even get to cook a meal. And if you plan on opening your restaurant, take some business courses to help you survive in the competitive food industry.

Coaching. One of the fastest growing careers, especially for business executives escaping the rat race, is personal coaching. Life coaches help people navigate their careers, relationships, or any part of their lives that need guidance, giving their clients a solid game plan and motivating them in the process. Although some practitioners without any formal training call themselves coaches, most life coaches are certified after taking accredited classes.

Green opportunities. Many people looking for second careers want to make a difference in the world, so interest in environmental careers is booming. Thanks to the 2009 Federal Stimulus Act, billions of dollars have been allocated to green businesses, and as many as 4.2 million jobs are expected to be added in the years ahead. Many green jobs will not require learning new skills or changing professions, as green businesses will still need traditional office staff like accountants, engineers, and project managers. But enrolling in an environmental studies or sustainable design program will give you a better understanding, and appreciation, for the green work ahead.

Nonprofit work. Despite the recession, jobs in the nonprofit sector are expected to grow. In fact, senior-level job openings have actually increased in the past few years. Nonprofit work can be very rewarding, but before jumping in to just any job, think about what charitable organizations are most meaningful to you, and spend some time volunteering. You’ll gain valuable insight into how nonprofits function, as well as the jobs within the industry.

Interior design. Designing the spaces in which people live and work can be both artistically and professionally rewarding. But interior designers do more than just choose colors, fabrics and furniture. They also have to be knowledgeable about construction codes, engineering, and safety. That’s why many states require interior designers to be certified, only granting licenses after candidates have earned an Interior Design degree or advanced certificate from an accredited university, fashion college or interior design school.

It may take more education and training to pursue a second career, but when you’re in a job that you absolutely love, you realize that all the hard work was worth it.

If you have dreamed of a second career in fashion design or interior design, get the education and training that will prepare you for success. Visit FIDM, Fashion school for more info.

Many people are getting into paid surveys nowadays. Why? This is because it can give them extra income especially now that the economy is in hard times. However, some people who have tried doing online surveys are not that satisfied with the returns that they are getting from it. Some just simply quits the job because they got scammed.

There are a lot of scam operators in this job. This is evident because there are a lot of survey sites that have come up in the internet. They have mushroomed to thousands and try to have as many members as they can. By getting members join their sites, they are able to operate scam techniques to get money for themselves.

If you happen to land on a scam survey site, then you are a loser in this job. So, what should be done to win over these scammers? The answer is simple. Join legitimate survey sites.

Majority of survey takers are using the search engine when looking for sites to join. What they do not know is that the sites that the search engines give them are not filtered. So, it is a random list of legit, scam and low paying sites. And since the scam ones completely outnumber the legal ones, it is difficult to find the right site to join. All you can have from using the search engines are lists of sites that are usually outdated.

To avoid getting into sites that just waste your time and effort, try using forums instead. This is an established place where people who are actually doing online surveys chat and share their ideas, infos, knowledge, insights and experiences. This is where you can get honest to goodness information and tips that can help you prosper with your online survey career. And by reading along, you can also get to know where the experienced people are getting high and good payments. This way, you are sure that what you are joining is a legit and good paying site.

Do not waste your joining just about any survey site you see online. Be cautious and assure yourself of a good and right payment for your time and efforts spent on doing paid surveys.

Here is a free Top 5 List of Legitimate Paid Survey Sites to Answer Surveys, paying $5-$275 for each survey taken.

The popularity of taking online jobs has been increasing tremendously nowadays. One of the more popular jobs through the online technology is by taking paid surveys. Though some may doubt the legitimacy of the job, many on the other hand, are enjoying what the job has given them. The doubts may be coming from the scams that have been reported from the job. It is easy to get started with this job. In fact, this may be the easiest and simplest way to get that fast cash others are looking for. Though you may earn a decent amount from doing paid surveys, you still have to consider some important thing. And these are the following:

- When taking paid surveys, you are in charge of your income. So, if you complete more surveys, then you will have more money. You can join several survey sites to be able to get more survey job offers. And by doing this, you are putting your name in good standings. However, you still have to take an extra effort in being cautious because online scams are everywhere in the online world. You can do a little research to make sure that you are joining a legit site or not.

- Before you become a member of a particular site, you are required to fill out an information online form. This is the company’s way to getting to know their members better. And some companies do not pay those who have incomplete information forms. So, be sure that you have filled out all the information fields required by the company. Anyway, legit companies do not sell any information that they have taken from their members.

- speaking of your profile information, have it updated regularly. Of course, companies that you are working for would like to know what has been happening to their members. And this will keep the company informed of what type of surveys they will send you.

It is best to know that your opinions really mean a lot for others and that you can even earn from it. But before jumping into this job, extra cautious is still a need to have a better survey taking career.

There really is no secret to gaining success in paid surveys. There are tips however, for a participant to follow.

By Agnes Vera Stevens

There really is no secret to gaining success in paid surveys. There are tips however, for a participant to follow. Anyone can join but not everyone can achieve the success that others are gaining. So if you are a newbie in paid surveys, here are some tips for you to follow to gain success and earn money:

1.	Understand the meaning

If you want to earn more, you have to understand and know about the concept of paid surveys in order to have knowledge of what you are about to enter. Gather information about paid surveys to know if you will like the type of job it offers or not. Research is a key factor that you must understand and go through in order to avoid scam and illegitimate sites. As discussed in previous sites, you should consider joining in forums to further learn more about paid surveys.

2.	Only join the legitimate and known sites

Part of your success will be by joining sites that are all legitimate, no funny business involved, which is why you need to do a research before you join any site to prove its legitimacy so that your efforts will not be wasted. Also consider joining in sites that offer surveys that are of interest to you and suit you in terms of gender and age so that you get to enjoy what you are doing. Also join as many sites as you can so you het a lot of surveys thus earning you more money.

3.	Organize yourself

When you register for multiple providers, make sure that you create a separate folder for each company so you won’t mix them up. Fill it up with the most honest, decent, well though out answers you can answer and submit it on time according to the deadline so that you build up a good impression and reputation with the providers.

Deciding on a career doesn’t have to be a job in itself; there are many career interest surveys and self-assessment tests that can help. Keeping in mind the career path you choose is a personal decision, assessments or surveys should only be completed to aid in that decision. The first step toward your career decision should be to complete a self-assessment test or survey. When completing a self-assessment you will answer questions about yourself in order to make an informed career decision. Often you will find out information about yourself that you did not previously realize.

The assessment will cover topics such as personal values, interests, personality and skills.

Personal Values

These are the things that are most important to you, for instance, status, income, or achievements. Your values are the most important things to consider when deciding on a career. If you are not happy in the position that you have chosen you will end up changing jobs.

Interests

Your interests are what you enjoy doing, such as drawing or writing; volunteer work or organizations you are affiliated with; or special interest groups. Maybe you enjoy walking or landscaping. Any of these could direct you to a successful career.

Personality

Questions about your individual traits, needs, attitudes, and what motivates you can help you to decide on an appropriate career.

Skills

Accomplishments you are good at, either self-taught or learned can easily be incorporated into the ideal career. For example, if you possess mechanical skills you might want to consider a career in repair; or writing skills might place you in a position of Editor.

Aside from personal values, interests, personality and skills there are other things to consider when choosing a career, such as family responsibilities and your ability to pay for continued education or training.

Keep in mind that a self-assessment is only the first step toward choosing a satisfying career. Just because your assessment proves you are good at landscaping, for instance, it doesn’t mean this seasonal job would be your ideal career. There are many opportunities available, and with further research you should be able to find your perfect career match.
