<p>It&#8217;s common knowledge that different personality types are well-suited for different types of careers. After all, you spend the larger part of your day doing your job, of course you want it to be one that your personality is well suited for!</p>
<p>One of the best indicators of personality is the Myers Briggs indicator, which measures your personality in four separate domains. You can be Introverted or Extroverted, Intuitive or Sensing, Thinking or Feeling, and Perceiving or Judging. The four combine to give you a four letter indicator of your personality type.</p>
<p>Because of the fact that these indicators tell you not only the way that you perceive yourself and the world, but the way that you interact with yourself, with other people, and with situations, it can be a great indicator of what kind of career you should pursue. By finding out what kinds of careers other people with your same personality type &#8211; in other words, other people who perceive the world and interact with the world in ways that are quite similar to you &#8211; have found joy and fulfillment, you can get a fairly decent indicator of what kind of work might bring you joy and fulfillment, as well. After all, if they are so very similar to you, aren&#8217;t they the absolute best people to tell you what you might find enjoyable?</p>
<p>When thinking about a possible career, make sure that you don&#8217;t only take things like pay scale and demand in the marketplace into account. Of course getting a good paying job is very important, but it&#8217;s also important to find fulfillment in life. Find out what your personality is, and what you might enjoy doing. Then you have another piece of information to factor into your decision!</p>

<p>Is there an entrepreneur inside of you waiting to escape? Have you been laid off and are thinking about starting your own business? Are you ready to make your first million? Do you know that you can build a better mousetrap? Do you want to work at home, be your own boss? There are countless reasons why people want to start a business. Some people who want to start their own business jump right in. They are risk takers. Others are more thoughtful planners who analyze the market and develop a comprehensive business plan. And still others have the dream but never take the plunge. How do you know if starting your own business is right for you; if it is what business and where do your begin?</p>
<p>The Right Stuff:</p>
<p>Do you have the &#8220;right stuff&#8221; to be an entrepreneur? Google &#8220;am I an entrepreneur&#8221; and countless tests and quizzes and assessments pop up that intend on answering that question for you. The assessments will have you check answers to questions that ask you if you are: Extrovert or introvert? Social butterfly or Loner? Risk taker or Low risk profile? Goes by the book or writes my own book? Self-starter or likes direction? and so on.</p>
<p>But before you quit your job because you got a high score on one of the tests, or are devastated because you don&#8217;t have the entrepreneurial personality recognize these assessments are only a place to begin making a decision. The good news is there are truly no right answers to these tests. They are only as meaningful as the accuracy of your self-assessment, the type of business you want to open, and your business, financial and lifestyle goals. Assessments are a good place to start but they are only the first step. A successful entrepreneur may benefit from certain personality characteristics, but also requires a vision, business knowledge, a good customer value proposition, and of course passion,passion, passion.</p>
<p>Almost anyone with vision and passion for a business can succeed &#8211; if they are clear about their personality style and strengths and look to others for support in the areas where they lack expertise.</p>
<p>Entrepreneurial Personality:</p>
<p>Author of The E-Myth Revisited and successful entrepreneur Michael Gerber has been reported as saying, &#8220;We&#8217;re born with that (entrepreneurial) quality and it defines our lives as we respond to what we see, hear, feel, and experience. It is developed, nurtured, and given space to flourish or is squelched, thwarted, without air or stimulation, and dies.&#8221; Does this mean any personality can be a successful entrepreneur &#8211; I say yes!</p>
<p>Results of a survey of successful entrepreneurs was published in a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article &#8220;So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur&#8221; February 23, 2009. The report described a list of traits many entrepreneurs have in common (an online version is available.) Yes, it is probably true many successful entrepreneurs are risk takers, make up their own rules, and possess the traits on the WSJ list. However, the article does not differentiate the traits of entrepreneurs who start different types of businesses. Certain personalities are a better match for an innovative technology start up and others will be more successful in a service based business (a business where your time is translated into dollars.) Why? Many service based businesses, such as professional speaking, coaching, nutrition counseling businesses, or web design and development require less of a financial risk and may be more suitable for certain personalities.</p>
<p>Coaching tips for aspiring entrepreneurs:</p>
<p>Online assessments: Check out a couple of the online quizzes and assessments. If you score high in entrepreneurial traits you may find a traditional job is not satisfying. So what are you waiting for? If you discover your traits do not seem to match those of the typical entrepreneur, yet you really want to start a business, ask yourself what is getting in the way and what can I do about it? Who can help?</p>
<p>Timing: Don&#8217;t abandon your dream if there are barriers to starting your own business right now. I wrote my first business plan in 1983 and didn&#8217;t become an entrepreneur until 2003. Its never too late.</p>
<p>Experiment: Risk averse? Not sure? Start a small business on the side and keep your day job. Devote one night a week or time on the weekend to your dream. Whether that is writing, coaching, counseling, or tele-teaching virtual groups. This experience will help you learn what it really means to work on your own.</p>
<p>Information Interviews: Contact several entrepreneurs and meet with them on the telephone or in person. This will help you learn what it really means to be an entrepreneur and understand what the &#8216;day in the life&#8221; of an entrepreneur is really like. Ask them key questions about the personality strengths they think contribute to their success. And don&#8217;t forget to ask for referrals for and additional 2-3 entrepreneurs to contact.</p>
<p>Know thyself: Take the online entrepreneurial assessment but go further. Learn more about your personality, strengths, work styles, and motivators. There are numerous personality tests in books, online, and offered by career coaches and consultants. These more in depth assessments will offer you invaluable insight to your personality and help you choose a fulfilling career path that matches who you are. Another simple way to learn about yourself is to ask trusted colleagues, friends, and family to an honest appraisal.</p>
<p>Hire, delegate, partner, collaborate: Remember you do not have to be the best at everything necessary to be a successful entrepreneur. Hire or collaborate with someone whose strengths complement your own.</p>
<p>As with any career, owning your own small business has rewards, challenges, great days and not so great days. <p>Are you wondering how to match your career and your personality?  Does your job feel like a badly fitting coat that you really have to stop wearing? Are you thinking of a career change and trying to find something that will suit your personal style?</p>
<p>Good idea!  Personality matching is an aspect of career choice and career change that is often overlooked and yet a poor match between career and personality is often the source of much frustration on the job.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what you should do.</p>
<p><strong>Take a personality test</strong></p>
<p>First of all you need to have some useful measure of your personality.  There are many free personality quizzes out there, some better than others.  As a career coach, my long term favourite is MBTI or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.  The thing I like about this personality quiz is that it helps you to understand how you prefer to behave, but does not pigeon-hole you rigidly into a specific personality type.  Indeed, there is a suggestion that your personality will mature as you grow and so what may seem like &#8216;you&#8217; at 20 will probably look rather different by the time you are 50!</p>
<p><strong>Take a pinch of salt!</strong></p>
<p>No personality test is perfect.  No test is really able to capture exactly who you are, so always take the results with a pinch of salt.   Do not let yourself be &#8216;labelled&#8217; or adopt a fixed and rigid view of who you are.  Be ready to disagree with the results &#8211; they can be wrong!  A lot depends on how you were feeling when you answered the questions and you could get a different result if you tried the test again in a few weeks time.</p>
<p>But this doesn&#8217;t mean these tests are a waste of time though.  A personality type test gets you thinking in detail about how you tend to habitually respond in a range of situations and puts this information together in a format that helps make your personal style clear to you. You may not agree entirely with what they say, but you will have done some useful thinking about yourself in the process.</p>
<p><strong>Take a look at your job</strong></p>
<p>Now take a look at the work you are currently doing in relation to the personality traits identified in the test you have taken.  The key question is &#8211; does your job allow you to use your preferred ways of working or is it forcing you into an artificial &#8216;work persona&#8217;?</p>
<p>The most obvious example to use here is Extroversion and Introversion.  These are personality characteristics that appear in most personality tests.  How does this relate to your career?  Well clearly if you are a quiet and private person who likes to take time over your work and needs space to reflect before responding to questions and problems, you will find it a challenge if you are in a job where you are constantly interacting with colleagues or clients or where all decisions have to be made collaboratively and quickly.</p>
<p>Conversely, if you are an outgoing people person, you will want to find work where you can get that interaction with others, because that is what gives you a buzz.  You will probably prefer to do your problem solving by talking things through with people and would find it hard to work for long periods on your own.  So a job that demands quiet concentration would be likely to drive you up the wall pretty quickly!</p>
<p>OK, this is a pretty obvious example, but it makes the point that the personality traits you identify in yourself can be a very useful measure to help you assess whether a new career idea you are considering will be a good match.</p>
<p><strong>Take action</strong></p>
<p>Once you have identified the key aspects of your personality and especially if you have spotted a mismatch with your current career, you need to do something about it.</p>
<p>Assess how big the gap is between you and your job.  In some cases you may feel you can stay put because the difficulties are not too severe.  The next option, if you are finding your job quite a challenge, is to explore how you might be able to change some of your current duties and responsibilities within your existing role.  If you are really at your wits&#8217; end with your current role, then use your personality test as a starting point to help you find out what career ideas would be a better match for you.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t just sit there in a job you hate &#8211; life really is too short.</p>
